The Bar of Ireland’s Look into Law TY Programme returns for its 10th year

04 March 2025

This year, the programme will welcome 96 students from 21 counties across Ireland, including 24 DEIS schools.

The Bar of Ireland is excited to welcome almost 100 students from across the country to the Law Library from Monday, 3rd March through Thursday, 6th March 2025.

Now in its tenth year, the Look into Law Transition Year Programme has continuously evolved to accommodate students from across the country, offering Transition Year students a comprehensive understanding of the legal system, court proceedings, and the responsibilities of barristers.

Expanding access to the profession for all students

The Bar of Ireland remains committed to fostering diversity and inclusion within the legal profession by encouraging students from all backgrounds to explore a career in law. The Look into Law Transition Year Programme is a cornerstone of The Bar of Ireland’s Equality Action Plan, ensuring that work experience and shadowing opportunities are accessible and promoted in collaboration with community stakeholders.

As part of this commitment, the programme continues to enhance diverse representation in its course content and improve accessibility for students with disabilities. Priority access is given to students from underrepresented, disadvantaged, and minority backgrounds, as well as those attending DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) schools, particularly for in-person elements of the programme.

A behind-the-scenes look at life as a barrister

Throughout the week, students will gain firsthand insight into the legal profession, hearing from The Bar of Ireland’s Chair, Seán Guerin SC, as well as junior and senior counsel and members of the judiciary. Through a “day in the life” perspective, they will explore various specialist practice areas, including criminal, civil, and environmental law, and take part in interactive Q&A sessions.

The programme begins with an online component on Monday and Tuesday, featuring live Zoom sessions with barristers, interactive breakout rooms and quizzes designed to enhance engagement and a comprehensive understanding of the profession. From Wednesday to Thursday, students will take part in in-person activities, including participation in a mock trial and tours that offer a behind-the-scenes look at life as a barrister. As part of this, all 96 students will experience an immersive visit to key legal institutions, including the Law Library, The Honorable Society of King’s Inns, and the Four Courts.

The programme will conclude with an online Q&A session, where students from across Ireland will have the opportunity to engage directly with a panel of barristers, ask questions, and further explore a career in law.

The Big Legal Q&A is an online session where students can ask questions to a panel of barristers. It is open to any schools wishing to participate. It will take place online during the school day. There are two options for dates; Friday 21st March or Thursday 1st May.

Students will have the opportunity to pose questions about life at the Bar, how the legal system operates, as well as ask career advice. Only one registration is required per class.
