On Friday, the 29th November, the Probate Bar Association will host their Annual Conference in the Distillery Building, Dublin 7. The title of this year’s conference is Estates: Home and Abroad and it will focus on a number of different aspects of probate and succession law in Ireland with a particular emphasis on issues that typically arise when a person dies owning assets in another country.
The Conference features an impressive lineup of speakers who are experts in various aspects of probate and succession law and over the past number of years it has come to be a hallmark event for professionals who practice in this area of law. The Conference will be chaired this year by John Donnelly SC, Chairperson of the Association and the first speaker will be The Honourable Ms. Justice Siobhan Stack of the High Court.
Discussions to include:
The Conference will feature presentations from a number of different speakers commencing with Judge Siobhan Stack who will discuss issues that currently feature in the work of the Non-Contentious Probate List of the High Court. Edmund Sweetman BL will then explain a variety of practical examples of Irish testators who have left property in Spain and the steps that need to be taken to property deal with such situations. After that Anne Heenan of the Probate Office will outline the procedural and practical issues that arise in seeking to admit a foreign will to probate in Ireland.
In the second session of the afternoon Paula Fallon, Solicitor will look at a number of issues of which practitioners ought to be aware when drafting wills and in particular where there is a foreign dimension to the estate. Elaine Byrne, Solicitor will alert us to potential pitfalls in the administration of estates in Ireland and Mark O’Riordan BL will then give an up-date of current case law in the area of probate and succession.
