Barristers in Ireland: An Evolving Profession since 1921 to be launched this week.
Published by Four Courts Press, Dr Niamh Howlin’s work offers a comprehensive exploration of The Bar and the barrister profession in the historical and social setting of 20th century Ireland. Illustrating a society in a state of change the study considers the evolving perceptions of the profession around themes such as gender, diversity, politics, work-life balance and the role of leadership in the legal sphere.
Through research gathered from the archives of The Honourable Society of Kings Inns, the Bar Council and contemporary interviews and testimonies of those who practiced, and continue to practice, readers will explore milestones and defining moments that have shaped the legal landscape in Ireland.
From landmark cases to the emergence of new areas of practice, this book provides a comprehensive narrative that underscores the enduring relevance of the Law Library and the legal profession as a whole.

Many barristers were at the forefront of the foundation of the State and displayed both innovation and resourcefulness. The book aims to highlight the importance of recording the past, preserving a valuable legal heritage, as well as recording a changing profession.

Rossa Fanning SC, Attorney General will officially launch the book, along with contributions from Sara Phelan SC, Chair of the Council of the Bar of Ireland and Hugh Mohan SC, Chair of the Honourable Society of King’s Inns.
