Sport Law Bar donation brings Afghan Appeal Fund to €50,000

08 December 2021

The generosity of the legal professions to the recent Irish Justice Community Afghan Appeal, has been supplemented by a generous donation by the recent Sport Law Bar Winter Conference, of €1,300.

The Appeal, and fund was established in early October to assist with the resettlement of 10 Afghan female judges and their families, arising from the Taliban insurrection in late summer 2021.  The families, all of whom have dependents, have arrived over the past number of weeks.

The generosity of the legal professions to the recent Irish Justice Community Afghan Appeal, has been supplemented by a generous donation by the recent Sport Law Bar Winter Conference, of €1,300.

The Appeal to the legal community has three pillars – seeking pledges of accommodation & housing, seeking financial donations and pledges of personal and collegiate support.  The donation of the Sports Law Bar Association will considerably assist in the integration and resettlement of the families, and be put towards vital supports in the area of housing, health, education and other needs.

Susan Ahern BL, Chair of the Sports Law Bar Association said;

“At a time of immense need and urgency, there is a call on all of us to see how we can assist.  The fact that we can practice and fully engage with our careers here in Ireland and in the West, is in sharp contrast with our colleagues in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

It is gesture of solidarity and also an effort to highlight the continuing plight of our colleagues.  We’re delighted to be able to make this donation, and look forward to continuing to support those arrived where we can.

Chair of The Bar of Ireland, Maura McNally SC said;

“Leadership springs from across the Bar at times like these, and the decision of the Sports Law Bar to contribute as they have, is a testament of that, as well as the true meaning of collegiately to our Afghan colleagues”.

This gesture comes on the back of a number of recent legal conferences also kindly adopting the Afghan Appeal as their nominated charity.
