Biography
In December 2022, and again in April 2024, I was nominated by the Taoiseach in Dáil Éireann, and subsequently appointed by the President, as Attorney General.
In this constitutional role, I attend Cabinet as adviser to the Government on all matters of law and legal opinion and as Ireland’s chief law officer, I oversee the work of the Office of the Chief State Solicitor, Office of Parliamentary Counsel and Office of the Attorney General.
I lead significant litigation on behalf of the State before domestic and international courts, including the successful defence of the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill when referred by the President to the Supreme Court under Article 26 of the Constitution.
I appeared for Ireland at the International Court of Justice in 2024 in proceedings concerning the legality of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory, and I am currently leading Ireland’s challenge to the UK’s Legacy Act before the European Court of Human Rights.
I am a Member of the Council of State, a Member of the General Council of the Bar of Ireland, a Council Member of King’s Inns, a Member of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board and a Member of the Advisory Committee on the grant of Patents of Precedence.
I am a Bencher of King’s Inns, a Vice-President of the Irish Centre for European Law and an Adjunct Full Professor at the Sutherland School of Law at UCD.
Prior to my appointment as Attorney General, I was in full-time practice as a Senior Counsel at the Bar of Ireland.
